Frewin Hall is a significant heritage asset in the heart of historic Oxford, reputedly the longest continuously occupied residence in the UK. It underwent a deep fabric retrofit to dramatically reduce space heating demand and support Brasenose College’s net zero aims.

Beyond Carbon played a major role in the development of the fabric upgrade strategy, including internal woodfibre insulation and airtightness measures.

Our work was carried out in the context of significant interest from the conservation authorities, and care had to be taken to ensure that all measures proposed were ‘reversible’ and would not permanently damage the heritage assets of the building. This included physical testing and moisture analysis of the external walls to ensure that all insulation and airtightness measures were sustainable in the long term.
